Vancouver Island South Club Night – Cruising... Round 2 Bluewater Cruising Association
Barb Peck and Bjarne Hansen quit their jobs and set sail on Freya (30' double-ended Hunter-Vogel) from Victoria to Hawaii in 2004. They cruised around various places in the South Pacific before sailing back up the Juan de Fuca Strait in 2006.
Shortly after returning from the South Pacific, Barb joined the Vancouver Island Watch in the Communications role, and Bjarne coordinated the Vancouver Island Fleet in 2009 and 2010. Barb was also one of the organizers of the WOW (Women on Water) seminar in 2013, while Bjarne has presented on various electrical topics to the Fleet. Their articles have appeared in Currents several times, while Freya was Currents cover-girl in March 2005 and Dec 2009.
In 2015, they once again set sail for points south, this time taking a somewhat more travelled path and on a Niagara 35. After spending the winter in the Sea of Cortez, they left Hoku Pa’a on the hard in Guaymas with the intention of returning to the Baja Peninsula when they can next disentangle themselves from work.
The presentation (Tuesday, January 17, 2017 @7:00 pm) will provide some comparisons between these two trips with comments about some of the differences and similarities, why some choices were made, and reflections on things they have learned. No doubt they will not be able to resist sharing some of the wonderful sights from the Golfo de California.
Barb and Bjarne will also share some of their experiences from the recent and unfortunate encounter between Hoku Pa’a and Hurricane Newton! See
