WOW 2017 – Meet the instructors for man back on board

by June Lazenby on 26 Mar 2017
Kelly Noel June Lazenby
The scariest situation of all for a boater is for someone to go over the side. Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary members Kelly Noel and Christine Rikley will cover MOB procedures, including lifts for crew that are bigger than you. You will have the opportunity to try throwing a lifeline and life ring. They will also go over cold water immersion and hypothermia protocol.

Kelly Noel’s life on the water started at an early age, sailing the B.C. coast on her parents’ 44 foot sailboat Citation. Kelly is RCM-SAR (Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue) Oak Bay’s only female coxswain, has volunteered with RCM-SAR for 11 years, and responded to more than 90 calls for help. Kelly melds her knowledge as a licenced Advanced Care Paramedic with her RCM-SAR experience to deliver a practical perspective to the field of marine first aid.

Just over 11 years ago, Christine Rikley left her landlocked Ontario hometown to dive headfirst into the B.C. coastal life, complete with a full spectrum of boating activities. Christine joined RCM-SAR Oak Bay seven years ago not just to help others, but to also become more confident and independent on the water herself. Christine works with BC Parks, and in her off-time can be found racing RVYC’s Kairos or enjoying the slower life cruising the coast by kayak.
