Vancouver Club Night – From the Baja to the Bash

by Bluewater Cruising Association on 4 Apr 2017
Tricia and Jim Bowen in San Francisco Bluewater Cruising Association
Tricia and Jim Bowen have been a cruising couple for the last 27 years, and full-time live-aboard cruisers for the last eight years. Despite having just recently gone past the 30,000 nautical mile mark together, their journeys have mostly been within 150 miles of the shoreline.

More “seasoned coastal cruisers” by their own definition, than off-shore sailors, they like to go at a slow pace and poke into all the nooks and crannies. After exploring Southeast Alaska for three seasons and making a dozen trips up the west coast of Canada, they set their sights on the warmer climes of Mexico. The next three adventure-filled years were spent making new cruising friends, exploring countless tropical anchorages, snorkelling in crystal waters, traveling by train to the famous Copper Canyon, and visiting many of the Sea of Cortez’s small towns and tiny fishing villages.

However, despite their love of Mexico and her wonderful people, they both became homesick for their beloved northern cruising grounds of so many years and brought FalconVII, their Kelly-Peterson 46 sailboat, back to Canada in August 2016. Join Tricia and Jim as they share some stunningly beautiful photographs and tell short stories from their three-year adventure.

For the first half of the presentation, Tricia will talk about their top 10 favourite places in Pacific Mexico from the Baja to Banderas Bay. She will show why they enjoyed places as diverse as La Paz with her almost quarter of a million residents and seasonal fishing villages of 20 or 30 people, together with deserted white sand and turquoise water anchorages.

The second half will see Jim discuss their strategy of how to take the bash out of the “bash” while cruising back to Canada. He will cover anchorages, weather, contingency planning, watch-keeping, bar crossing, river cruising and more, as he shows slides of their four-month cruise back to Victoria, BC where their mantra was “go slowly, have fun, meet people”.

Previous presentations given by Tricia and Jim on Alaska and Mexico have been well received, and we hope you can join us for what should be a fun and informative evening.
