Off the beaten tracks - World ARC in Suwarrow and Niue

by World Cruising on 31 May 2017
World ARC in Suwarrow and Niue World Cruising Club
After sailing 690 from Bora Bora, World ARC fleet joined the atoll of Suwarrow, a beautiful island part of the Cook Islands. The fleet anchored in its peaceful and amazing lagoon. No one lives on this island that is only accessible by boat.

Due to a weather warning on the area between Suwarrow and Niue, the fleet decided to delay the restart and had plenty of time to enjoy the island with sundowners on the beach, a Pot Luck with crab race, Litter Pick, and a great party with pizza cooked in the oven built in 1962 by Tom Neale the famous hermit that lived 25 years on Suwarrow and wrote the book 'An island to oneself'.

With weather settled the fleet started for the second part of the Leg, 540 miles to Niue, an amazing island made of igneous rock, on the way to Tonga. This island has a lot of interesting coastline to visit, with several sea caves and natural pools and spectacular diving spots with excellent visibility due to particular clear water.

The World ARC participants enjoyed a beautiful dinner with welcome drinks offered by Admiral Insurance, at Matavai Scenic Restaurant and everybody was impressed by the beautiful view, the food was delicious and the warmth of the welcome from the islanders left the participants amazed.

The first part of the fleet is expected to leave tomorrow followed after a couple of days from the rest of the boats, a short crossing of 230 miles to Tonga the final destination of this Leg.
