Annual Women's Sailing Convention - Range of sailing topics slated

Annual Women's Sailing Convention - Do women sailors, when desiring to learn more skills, prefer courses taught by women instructors? Celebrating 26 years as the number one sailing education event for women on the West Coast, the Annual Women's Sailing Convention on Saturday, February 7, proves that women-only educational opportunities are highly popular.

With water and land-based workshops, the Convention is full of courses for the brainiac to hands-on, beginner to the experienced, and returns to the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Corona del Mar, California. It is presented by the Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA) and sponsored by Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS).

Top women sailors from all over Southern California, many of whom are USCG-licensed captains, will present all 30 of the workshops. Attendees may select a combination of topics such as Welcome Aboard (for beginners), How to Heave a Line, Easy Electrical Education, Navigation 101, Dabble in Diesels, Suddenly Singlehanded, Advanced Anchoring, Weather, Introduction to Racing, Docking Basics, Rigging Spinnakers and Overboard Procedures.

New this year are Cruising the Channel Islands, Prepare to Cruise to Mexico and 10 Years at Sea, a talk about 'a few bad days at sea' along with lessons learned by two-time circumnavigator Capt. Nancy Early. The event includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, handouts, souvenirs, and opportunity to purchase logo’d event merchandise.

Capping the day will be dinner’s featured speaker, photographer and Ultimate Sailing Calendar publisher Sharon Green who has been capturing electrifying images of performance sailing for more than three decades.

Green has also been extensively published in the world’s foremost boating periodicals, and has published two books since first taking up a camera in high school. Since then she has worked on eight America’s Cups and countless other high profile campaigns and regattas. Green say’s she is the happiest when photographing on the water or from a helicopter, in ‘fresh-to-frightening’ conditions, in search of the elusive ‘Ultimate Sailing’ image.

To obtain a reservation form, please call 951-677-8121; email: Gail@scya.org or visit our website. The convention fee of $200.00 includes workshops, breakfast, lunch, dinner, souvenirs and handouts.
