Perhaps one of the more significant developments in the 2022 international sailing league season was the evolution of the Austrian J/70 Sailing League.

First starting with a cheap Chinese sailboat in their first few seasons, the Austrians realized they were at a significant disadvantage sailing against teams from across Europe that had standardized on the high quality, extremely well-engineered, superior sailing, International J/70 One-design sailboat.

"Practice makes perfect" is the idiom most sailors recognize, and the Austrians have now followed the lead of their German, Swiss, and Italian compatriots that surround them in the middle of Europe sailing J/70 sailboats exclusively. Now, the Austrians are finding greater success on an international stage sailing their new fleet of J/70s!

In their recent event at Maurach, Austria on the Achensee, the eighteen sailing clubs enjoyed incredibly close racing. In the end, it was the Burgenländischer Yachtclub that won the weekend after 25 races sailed, winning the event by a mere 3 points! Their neighbors on the Worthersee, the Union Yachtclub Wörthersee won their last two races but it was still not enough to overcome their worthy adversary's commanding lead. Third was the Segelclub TWV Achensee, losing a tiebreaker with the Union Yachtclub Wörthersee at 29 pts total each.

Notably, the racing was so tight that Union-Yacht-Club Attersee finished in fourth place just two points back. And, Union Yachtclub Wolfgangsee was yet only three more points back to take fifth place. In short, the Austrians are hot on the trail to make up lost time sailing on J/70 class sailboats and they are learning fast!

As a result of the third act on the Achensee, the Burgenländischer Yachtclub is leading the series with 43 pts, followed by Union Yachtclub Wörthersee in second with 57 pts, and Yachtclub Podersdorf in third with 61 pts.
