Hi all.
i am the new owner of a second hand 420. does anyone know where I can get hold of a manual for the 420. I want to read up on the basics. Also should the cable for the Mast to the bow reach or do I tie it down. On my boat it does not seem to reach the front fixing. Thanks

Typically the wire at the front is tied with a short bit of rope for the last few inches.
Because its a boat that's been built by a number of different builders with rather different specifications, and because owners have a moderate amount of freedom to alter things themselves I don't think you're going to find a manual with the same level of detail that you would for say a car: rather like reading an Astra manual when you have an Escort. Most of its pretty much right, but the pictures don't match and some of the detail is off. However I would have thought class websites will have a lot of what you need. I just threw this into google https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=420%20rigging%20guide, and I got a number of rigging guides, and they will mostly be roughly right. This one looked quite good to me at a glance: http://www.420manual.com/ Its Australian based, but most things will be similar. Its just a question of how like your boat is to the one that guy is working with. One thing to be aware of is that US based sites will mostly be talking about a Club 420 or C420. This is a basically similar boat, but rigged differently. Assuming that's Manchester UK you almost certainly have an International 420 AKA Int 420 or I420... Edited by JimC - 27 Oct 15 at 5:02pm |

Thanks guys. It was built by Rondar in the UK in 1997. Yes I am based in Manchester UK. Its just that all the images I find show the forestay fitting directly to the Bow shackle. Its no issue using a length of Dyneema to tighten it down, it just didnt look correct.
Thanks for the tips and links. john

Is it possible that my mast has the wrong forestay cable? Can this be changed easily?

What you have seems utterly conventional: don't alter it.
The forestay can be changed readily, but the range of adjustment used on the forestay these days makes the small lashing by far the most practical method of securing it. You'd just be wasting money. Sailing loads are taken on the jib anyway. |

OK. thank you everyone for the replies. I have ordered some new 4mm Dyneema to secure it.

The forestay is only there to hold the rig up when the jib is off. The rig will be supported by the wire luff in the jib when you're sailing.
