The boat on the right, Last Amber Dragon as was, arguably kicked off foam sandwich home boat building in the UK.

Great pic :-)
But is that much twist on the main fast? I wouldn't have thought there was so much difference in apparent wind flow direction from top to bottom of the main. Maybe in a s/h it's easier to sail when doing that. i14s or any skiffy 2/h boats don't twist like that downwind. |

I would agree Andy.
Do the D-ones use much kicker upwind? I wonder whether they can get away with minimal kicker upwind, like an OK or Finn due to the wide traveller and they just need to pull a arm load on downwind, but when they've got a bit on (as in the picture) you'd tend to ignore it! |

Of course some of that twist is as a result of the mast bending forward. More kicker will only partially prevent that.

D1's sail with no kicker on upwind (boom stopped skying by strops) and twist is controlled downwind. You play the kicker on single sail reaches! It's a great photo, but for me I soil like a little more kicker as that does look awfully open at the top. Having said that they are very different to many other boats and conditions were fairly wild I beleive. So as with most things the picture doesn't show the whole story!

For what its worth, some well powered assy boats get overpowered downwind - i.e. cant heat it up enough into the true wind to get ripping - so when its like that the main will get less vang and the jib more eased - may be the case here.
Or just as likely he had the vang off upwind but hadn't set it right for the downwind and had enough on sailing without reaching in to mess with the vang. Could also be dynamic - piling into the back of a wave! |
