well yes that is what I was going to say - sign on and record the PY you are sailing to. At least at my club they do take great care with who sails to which number.

So the fleet will be split and anyone with an A rig wont be able to race the people with B's and vice versa at the nationals? Seems a shame. Or maybe I've misunderstood, but if i bought a big rig boat I'd want the opportunity to be thrashed by all the lightweights. I'd want to be buying in to a fleet of over 100 boats, not 50. I really do think the 300 model with same number for both rigs works very well and everyone has an opportunity to do well dependant on wind conditions. However having said that most people do use the B's.... Edited by chrisg |

Fair enough, you guys are the ones who bought the boats so i dont want to interfere but i know I'd want to be racing everyone, regardless of which rig I or they were using and wouldnt want the fleet results split....

Question
Do you have to sail in your weight range. Will class rules stipulate that <85kg Must use 8.4 or >85kg Must use 10.2? OR is 85kg a nominal point and you choose which sail to register for a race or series with. i.e nothing to stop a 90kg fatboy using the 8.4 for a season (and praying for big wind) or the other way round. If so, provided that you registered with a 10.2, can you sail with an 8.4 when the wind gets up? ( Like a 600) |

Is the kite the same size on both? And what are the reccomended weight ranges for the rigs, I had always just assumed I wanted the big one, I am just touching 80kgs and am 6 foot 2.

I would much prefer this arrangement - both fleets racing together.
Ultimately it is going to be the only way to truly test if the rig sizes actually perform differently in the same conditions - plus it will make for much better big fleet racing. Personally I doubt that the PY's should be that different (or that way around !) given that the kites are the same size for both. I would have thought that in typical marginal conditions a lighter helm is going to be advantaged on the downwind (where mainsail size is not such a significant factor) being able to sail a deeper hot angle than the heavier guys - going to be interesting to see though ! At 80kgs, the 8.4 is probably the choice depending on where you sail. Kite
is the same for both 12.5m. Still gives you 20.9m of downwind sail area! I understand that split of sails is probably more 8.4's at the moment. I don't think there was a notable difference in performance during testing, hence the small difference which equates to about 30s over an hours race. James the 10.2 is also between a laser and a Phantom. On the same sail package a phantom comes out at something like 10.5m. Epoxy hull....PY of 1043 yeah right ![]() |

I thought there would be more of the big rigs to be honest, my only issue with getting the small rig is that I am much more likely to put on weight than lose it, I dont want to half to pay for another sail and a mast section 6 months down the line. I have until september to decide so I will keep an eye on my height and weight up until then. I will also speak to ldc and test sail both rigs if I can. Perhaps the 8.4 is a better option though as I can imagine 10m of sail swinging across in a gybe in any decent wind would be quite a handful!
