Laser and Solo Open at Avon Sailing Club

by Mike Adams 28 Sep 2007 07:13 UTC 23 September 2007

The sailors at the combined Laser Wessex Circuit and Solo Western Travellers Series Open Meetings at Avon Sailing Club on Sunday 23 September were greeted with almost ideal sailing conditions for the event on this often challenging stretch of the River Severn near Tewkesbury. Around 12-15 knots of wind from the South gave the 17 sailors some excellent racing over the 3 races – plenty of tacking practice on the upwind beat followed by some exciting runs downwind.

In the Solo fleet visitors Chris Brown and Colin Newton showed the home sailors the way round the course with a closely fought tussle - Chris just finding the right shifts to take the honours in the end. George Keighley was the first Avon sailor home, taking 3rd place and the Chaceley Cannon as the club Solo Class Trophy.

In the Laser class the visitors again took the honours but there was close racing through the fleet. John Ling, although pressed by local sailor Andy Warren in the final race, took a well deserved first place from Tim Keighley in 2nd overall. Local teenager Alastair Lucas produced some excellent sailing in a Radial to take 3rd place overall and also the club Laser Class Trophy.

Overall Results:

Laser
1st John Ling (Upton Warren)
2nd Tim Keighley (West Riding SC)
3rd & 1st Radial, Alastair Lucas (Avon SC)

Solo
1st Chris Brown
2nd Colin Newton
3rd George Keighley (Avon SC)
