A week of very mixed conditions at Bembridge Sailing Club

by Mike Samuelson 24 Aug 2020 05:20 UTC 17-23 August 2020

Very mixed conditions last week and sadly the strong winds on Friday and Saturday saw N over A on both days of the Club's annual Regatta which was obviously a real shame.

Congratulations to Richard Jessel in Blue Jay who was the overall winner of the Redwing's Campbell Trophy prize that was raced for during the week; also to D Orange who won the One-Design's Billy Fortescue Cup (Ladies race) on Tuesday.

Despite finishing somewhat bloodied after nearly knocking himself out when he gybed at the leeward mark during Thursday's second One-Design race, congratulations to Charles & Davinia Perry who won the Spouses Trophy on Thursday.

Start of the 2nd One-Design race for the Spouses Trophy:

Although still quite boisterous, conditions on Sunday afternoon at Seaview (F5 WSW'erly) provided some excellent racing for seven Redwings and three One-Designs in the first day of SVYC's annual Regatta. Starting and finishing on the SVYC line, the first and last legs were broad reaches and then it was a windward leeward course between two inflatables. For the Redwings it was three times round, and twice for the One-Designs.

Just after the start of the SVYC Redwing race on Sunday:

Early in the first beat Joe Robertson in Red Gauntlett II had a problem with the main halyard and had to retire and return to Bembridge under jib. This left Rory Morrison in Skua, Colin Samuelson in Toucan, the McCues in Musicus and Jonathan N-L helming Blue Jay as the leading group. On the second round, Skua established a useful lead which was extended during the third round. This left the other three to battle for second and third. With Toucan having to take a penalty at the final windward mark, the way was open to Blue Jay to take second and Musicus third. Although a little way back, Tara, helmed by Will Toogood and Plover, helmed by Andrew Eddy had a close race with barely a boat length separating them at the finish.

There was little in it between the three One-Designs during the first round but having established a slight lead, Hugh Doherty in No 10 extended it during the second round and finished well ahead of Jos Coad helming No 8 and Ashley McLucas in No 6.

Day 2 at Seaview on Monday and then daily racing continues at Bembridge until after the Bank Holiday.
