Comet Trio, Duo & Versa Open at Hawley Lake Sailing Club

by David Talbot 28 Sep 2004 07:52 UTC 25 September 2004

Comet Trios, Duos and Versas travelled from Kent to Dorset to the central location of Hawley Lake (just off the M3 junction 4a).

The Trios sailed first with the Duos and Versa sailing as a combined fleet three minutes behind. Race officer, Chris Fyfe-Shaw set the first course of a figure of eight that made use of most of the lake with equal downwind and reaching sections which was great for the asymetrics of the Comet Trios. In the first race the lead changed places several times before it was won by Chris Boutle with class secretary Eric Goodley in the unusual position as crew. The Duo/Versas were led home by the two single handed local sailors Steven Linton and then John Sturgeon before the first crewed boat of Bill Wright and Frank Oliver followed by Martin and Jackie Hiscock from Mudeford.

After lunch the second race was shortened after two laps as the drizzle set in and although four Trios took turns to lead David Talbot and son Richard had established a winning lead. The single handed Duos finished in the same order, but this time the Versa of Rik and Sal Sellwood, sailing together for the first time since the birth of their son George, came in first of the crewed boats.

The third and final race was more over a combined figure of eight with sausage course. In the end David and Richard came first in the Trio's with Godfrey Ayres with son George (son Henry had done well in an earlier race), just managed to beat Chris and Eric to the line. Steven was followed in by John, now crewed by his wife, but Bill and Frank came in first of the crewed Duos to win that title.
