Colemere Sailing Club, Shropshire, held an inaugural Grand Prix event to coincide with the British Grand Prix on Sunday 6th July. The emphasis was very much on fun and enjoyment for all, not too much serious racing. The format of the racing was very different to the standard 3 x 1 hour races, but rather 10 x 10 minute races using the pursuit model. The aim of the day was to give all participants a realistic opportunity to cross the finishing line first and the OODs Tom Harris and Steve Murphy ensured that this actually happened.

The event started with an OOD briefing at 1000 hrs. The first of five back-to-back races commenced at 1030 sharp with thirteen starters. Lunch followed as Steve Locke had lit the Colemere BBQs and members cooked you their own food on the same. Steve and wife Sharon also organised shore-based games for the younger children. The sailing resumed following lunch, and again the aim was to complete a further five short races.

The wind was light and variable throughout and the heaviest of showers coincided with the BBQ lunch. The racing was great fun and really enjoyed by all taking part. There were first-time race wins for Helen Smith and Felicity Ramage and other great results posted by Derek Farnfield, Ian Ramage and Richard Mansfield.

A very fine bespoke glass trophy was made by member Ed Burke (and kindly donated) and presented by Club Captain Tom Harris to winner Nick Edmunds.
