Sea Shepherd have launched another campaign this month! Operation Jairo Nicaragua is a continuation of our sea turtle protection program.
From now until the end of December, Sea Shepherd crew will patrol the beaches of the Padre Ramos region in Nicaragua - home to nesting sites for Pacific Hawksbill, Olive Ridley, Green, and Leatherback sea turtles.
Our volunteers are patrolling the beaches in order to identify poachers, protect nesting mothers, and bring eggs to a hatchery to incubate. Once the baby sea turtles have been safely born, they will be returned to the ocean.
So far, we have found two nests and brought 142 eggs to the hatchery. With the assistance of locals, we also removed a fishing hook from the mouth of a mother turtle who had just laid her eggs.
As only one out of 1,000 sea turtles will survive to adulthood, it is critical that Sea Shepherd is there to protect the turtles from poaching and other dangers to give them the best chance at survival.
