Peterborough Lakeside Sailing Club Open Regatta

by Joseph Tierney 2 Oct 2000 08:25 UTC

1st October 2000

Following a lingering foggy, windless start to the day, the sun finally broke through and brought with it a gentle breath of wind just in time for the start of the first race. We were pleased to receive visitors from Wanlip SC and Notts County SC who brought their Byte, Topper and Scorpion classes to join the local club fleet. The Scorpion was the fastest boat on the water by some distance and he turned in three straight wins despite the earnest efforts of the fleet behind him. The nearest to him were the Phantom, the "Bogeyman" Wayfarer and the brand new Kestrel. With two out of three races to count, he could have sat out the third race, but the fickle breeze had by then picked up a little and he was enjoying the sailing! With such a mixed fleet, it is easy for the smaller boats and less experienced helms to be overshadowed but sterling efforts took the Byte into fourth place in the first race and the Topper, in his first open meeting, sailed and finished in creditable style in three quite demanding races. Lakeside always welcomes visitors, even if they come and win our events!
