Border Counties midweek sailing at Chester Sailing and Canoe Club

by Phil Proctor 16 Jun 2022 17:40 UTC 14 June 2022

The day was sponsored by PHP Projects which meant no entry fee encouraging boats to take to the water in light challenging conditions.

XC Weather predicted 2-3mph at Chester which normally means no chance of sailing, however, 13 visitors and just 1 local boat of Phil Snewin and OOD Phil Proctor and the team were given little choice of trying to get racing under way with most of the fleet being ready to launch by 9.30! Given the first race wasn't due to start till 11, this is a testament to enthusiasm for this series.

Race 1

There was just enough wind to get the fleet away on time with a light breeze that came and went throughout the race and was difficult to tell who would emerge victorious until the number-crunching had been done, this would be a trend for the rest of the day. The outcome was a 1st and 3rd for a pair of well-sailed flyweights in Comets by Dave Turtle and Steve Bellamy with Pete Coop being the Supernova sandwich finishing 2nd.

Race 2

After an extended but pleasant lunch break sat in the sunshine watching the tidal flow which would have made racing not possible, a unforecasted gentle breeze filled the race course, again the fleet was up and down but Pete Coop and Eric Haselden led on the water throughout gaining sufficient time to claim 1st and 2nd together with the ever-reliable Dave Turtle claiming 3rd in his Comet.

Race 3

Whilst the wind was still filling in and being more stable the race turned out to be a similar affair of the leading trio of Pete Coop, Dave Turtle, and Eric Haselden finishing 1,2,3 respectfully.

Despite the challenging conditions, everybody had a thoroughly enjoyable day. Hopefully see you all for the Bala event on the 12th July.
