24hr race at Coleraine Yacht Club Preview

This year sees the 34th 24 hour race on the River Bann, a unique event in Ireland, on as challenging a course as can be found anywhere. The combination of sweeping bends in the river, which drains 2/3 of Northern Ireland, strong tides and a narrow channel, is enough in itself to make this an exceptional race. The river runs at between 2 and 5 knots. Also to be taken into consideration are the ebb and flood.
Tactics are of paramount importance. Obviously the 1999 winners, Strathclyde University, had done their homework even if it was their first entry to this race. The fact that the team captain comes from that renowned club – West Lancs. Yacht Club – the original founders of the 24hr Race - probably assisted them somewhat!)
- Up to the minute position fixing by computer.
- Numerous trophies & prizes
- Nine or more classes of craft on the water. (More would be welcome)
- Chandlers on site - for clothing, rigging, shackles etc.
Combine this with hospitality second to none on the world famous Causeway Coast and you have an event to savour. Over the thirty-three years of its existence the event has been continually developed to the exceptionally high standard you see today.
